ADHD & Executive Function
ADHD Evaluation
Difficulties with focus, organization, and follow-through can stem from many causes, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disruption, or chronic stress. A careful, evidence-based ADHD evaluation is essential before making a diagnosis.
The process begins with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to understand your history, medical background, sleep patterns, and overall functioning. When appropriate, laboratory studies are reviewed to rule out medical contributors.
If ADHD remains a possibility, I use validated questionnaires and collateral information to assess symptoms across settings and over time. At a follow-up visit, we review results together and determine whether diagnostic criteria are met. When presentations are complex, referral for neuropsychological testing may be recommended.
ADHD Treatment
Treatment is individualized and may include:
• Executive functioning strategies
• Psychotherapy collaboration
• Lifestyle and sleep optimization
• Functional mental health considerations
• Medication management with careful monitoring
Stimulant Prescribing Philosophy
Stimulants are first-line treatment for ADHD and can be highly effective. However, they are controlled substances and require careful screening, informed consent, and ongoing monitoring.
They do not work for everyone. Non-stimulant options or alternative medications may be more appropriate depending on medical history and individual response. Medication decisions are collaborative and safety-focused.
